10. Finale
A week later...
I think it has been good for Noira to see her family again. Agmis has been having some long talks with me. I've learnt a lot more about him, and he more about me. I told him about all of my adventures on the Ages of Myst and and Riven, and about Atrus, Catherine, Cirrus, Achenar and Ghen. He seemed very interested. The problem is... Where in D'ni is Atrus's enclosed study? Hey... A thought just occurred to me... I'm sure Atrus once mentioned to me he was blocked off from the rest of D'ni on K'veer. That means his study must be somewhere on K'veer!
I mentioned these memories to Agmis and he thinks we should do an immediate search of K'veer. Noira says she wants to come too. The three of us pack a day pack, and link to D'ni.
Well well, this is harder than I thought. It's virtually impossible to climb out of this window (don't know why I didn't think of that). Agmis offers to get some climbing gear from Cissar. When he returns, we manage to climb to the base of the island. We shouldn't need to get back up, because Agmis thoughtfully packed a linking book back to the book room. Agmis told me that there was an exit at the back of the room. Now it appears to be blocked by rubble.
For the rest of the day we search. Finally, we find some tunnels. Looks familiar. All but one are blocked. We follow the unblocked one and... It's here! Atrus's study. But what's the tunnel doing unblocked? Atrus must be doing some exploring himself.
I do a snoop of Atrus's study (something I would not have dared to do once, with Atrus around), and eventually find some linking and descriptive books. Incidentally, one of them is Age 5 (Riven)! Opening up to the last page, I discover that it is well and truly destroyed. I don't think the link would even work anymore. It's done for.
Noira eventually discovered the Myst book as well, but no matter how hard we all search through the Ages of Myst, we can't find anyone anywhere. There's a few other ages here as well, but nothing I'm familiar with. You have to be careful with unknown ages. Tay isn't here, either, by the way.
We returned to the book room, but not before I had left Atrus a small
note:
Atrus and Catherine,
Me and two D'ni friends, Agmis and Noira, have been searching for you. At the end of the blocked tunnel facing north we have left for you a linking book to a book room on this very island of K'veer. Should you decide to use the book, remember that I probably will have returned to the surface. Try the first book first. Then try the last one (Both link to one of Agmis's ages, Gaelin) Friend |
After we had returned to Gaelin, I prepared to return to the surface. Agmis gave me an old D'ni map of the Guild of Surveyors that belongs to his family to guide me. After saying our farewells, I left.
The journey was long. The D'ni were geniuses to devise this maze of twisted tunnels.
Eventually, I arrived at the surface. After just a few minutes walk, I discovered the K'veer linking book on the ground, where I had first used it. Suddenly, I remembered. This belonged to Ti'ana, Ghen's mother. She put it here after the fall of D'ni. And here I have it... In my hand. I took it with me.
I remembered Atrus's words... "You know where to find me."
I'll have another outrageous story to tell my mates back home.
*Author's note: The passage about the search for Atrus and Catherine occurs during the time when the Atrus and other D'ni are visiting and changing the face of Terahnee forever. You can read more about this in Myst: The Book of D'ni. Until now, Atrus has never used the linking book to the book room. Perhaps the tunnel caved in on it. As they say, the ending can never be written...
